Making New Connections Between Old Neighbors™

Several developments are underway in the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway™, the 320-mile corridor that lies within a hidden landscape once traversed by the little known 1830s-era Pennsylvania Main Line Canal.  The Greenway links outdoor recreation, historic preservation and interpretation, environmental stewardship, and economic enhancement through 16 counties in southwestern and south central PA.

In the Kiski-Conemaugh Cluster, between Johnstown and Freeport:

·         In December 2007 DNCR approved a Community Conservation Partnership Program grant for a Kiski-Conemaugh Water Trail Mapping Project.  The maps will provide a high level of cartographical detail, present interpretive information, identify trail and other recreational opportunities in the corridor, and direct trail users into hub communities like Blairsville, Saltsburg, Apollo, Freeport and more.  Emphasis will also be placed on creating web-friendly printable maps on-line.  Public input sessions for this project will be scheduled throughout the basin in the spring of 2008.

·         The Conemaugh Valley Conservancy (CVC) is implementing a feasibility study for approximately 7 miles of trail through the scenic Conemaugh Gap, between Johnstown and Seward.  The study should be complete in June 2008.

·         CVC also recently secured additional monies needed to go to construction on their long-awaited Q-Span project – a spectacular 580’ bridge over existing rail road abutments to extend the 12-mile West Penn Trail from the Westinghouse Plant to the Blairsville side of the Conemaugh River.

·         A Trail Town Assessment was conducted in Saltsburg, Indiana County on November 15, 2007.  Saltsburg is a hub for the 12-mile West Penn Trail and the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, four miles which are currently under construction from Saltsburg to Slickville in Westmoreland County.  Among other things, the Assessment identified that many community members and business owners in town needed information about where the trail heads were located and improved signage was needed at trail heads to direct trail users to businesses and services in town.

·         As a part of Saltsburg’s efforts to tie their heritage and outdoor recreation assets to each other and to community revitalization, the Saltsburg Area Historical Society is working the Kiski-Conemaugh Cluster Coordinator to create a new interpretive heritage tour guide.  The guide will not only focus on historic building stock, but also highlight land and water trail access points, the Canal Park, a special section on “things that aren’t there anymore” and businesses and services available in and around the borough.

·         Allegheny Ridge Corporation secured a Gateway Communities Planning Workshop grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission on behalf of the Freeport/Leechburg/Apollo Group.  The grant provides for technical assistance and training valued at $20,000 through the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Conservation Fund.  The workshop is tentatively scheduled for June 13/14 or 20/21 and will engage at least 30 community members in the design and implementation of public art that enhances their gateways to natural areas including the Kiskiminetas and Allegheny Rivers and the Roaring Run Natural Area.  A site visit with the communities and funders was organized on December 17.

·         Allegheny Ridge Corporation’s Kiski-Conemaugh Cluster Project Coordinator helped secure a grant for the Roaring Run Watershed Association (RRWA) through Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections – a regional celebration of the anniversary of the naming of the region.  The Coordinator and RRWA will create an interpretive and directional map and brochure of RRWA’s 650+ acre natural and recreation area near Apollo, PA.
