ARCorp Attends the 2001 Venture Outdoors Festival
September 12, 2001

Fostering Quality of Life and Environmental Stewardship
Deborah Nardone, Director of Community and Watershed Stewardship, and Dan Pryor, Project Coordinator for the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Greenway, represented Allegheny Ridge Corporation (ARCorp) at Venture Outdoors 2001 (VO2), the first annual outdoor recreation festival held Saturday, September 8 on Washington's Landing, Pittsburgh. Nardone and Pryor manned a display booth showcasing ARCorp projects and featuring the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Mainline Canal Greenway, Pennsylvania's Millennium Legacy Trail.

The Greenway is a growing network of locally managed community and environmental stewardship initiatives within the 260-mile-long segment of the former PA Mainline Canal route between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. This network will consist of land and water-trails, community parks and open spaces, preserved canal and other historic remnants, local museums and cultural attractions, and downtown amenities such as shops and restaurants.

Approximately two miles wide, the Greenway corridor follows the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg upstream to the mouth of the Juniata River, and continues upstream to the Juniata headwaters atop the Allegheny Ridge. The Greenway enters the Allegheny Watershed at the headwaters of the Kiski-Conemaugh Basin and continues downstream through Johnstown to Freeport, where it follows the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh.

The free festival provided people of all ages the opportunity to safely sample a variety of non-traditional outdoor activities. Displays and interactive presentations motivated people of all ages to participate in outdoor activities, such as biking, paddling, climbing, fishing, and nature observing, thus increasing the numbers who espouse greater support of the natural environment.
Allegheny Ridge Corporation is a private, non-profit corporation charged with developing, interpreting and preserving the historic, cultural, natural, scenic, and recreational resources of the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area in central/western PA (Blair, Cambria, Somerset and Huntingdon Counties and beyond).
